People tend to judge success by the outward trappings of the business. So if, after seven years, Cure Deli had mushroomed and now had lashings of all kinds of meat constantly available through a number of our own beautifully branded butcheries which stayed open 24/7 so that it was super simple for everyone to pick up as much as they wanted of what they wanted when they wanted it; and/or a large fleet of snazzely branded caddies (like mine!) were constantly cruising across the peninsula dropping off orders everywhere from Melkbosstrand to Gordon’s Bay, then people would say, “Wow, you’ve certainly done well,” and I have no doubt that my bank balance would look a whole lot healthier.
But we’re not there and what makes us proudest about the past seven years is that we have never compromised on our original commitment, which was and still is:
To do our best to Cure a few of the ills that beset this world of mass consumerism by always only sourcing really good meat directly from small local ethical farms and never getting caught up in half –truths, factory farms and feedlots, manipulative middle meat merchants and dodgy distributors.
Competitors and naysayers shake their heads and warn that we’ll never really grow and prosper while we remain so picky. “You can’t run a profitable operation only selling real free range meat, there just isn’t enough of it around and it costs far too much,” is the gist of the argument they all proffer.
But so far we have managed to stay afloat and even grow a little, thanks to the ongoing encouragement and consistent support of those of you who regularly place orders or pop along to the markets and personally pick out packs of your particular preferences. We are confident that with sufficient support, both our farmers and Cure Deli will slowly expand and more of the right stuff will become available to us all.
